The article states that there are some doubts about the accuracy of the Chvalier's memoir. The professor opposes this statement by saying that noy all memoirs are correct in every detail, and the Chevalier memoir is overally correct and is a relible historical source.

First, the reading claims that the Chevalier was not wealthy as he claims in his memoir, because he borrowed significant amount of money from a merchant. The professor refutes this point by saying that getting a loan doesn't mean the Chevalier was poor. She explains that the Chevaier's wealth was in form of properties, so whenever he needed money to spend on parties and gambling, he had to sell these assets to convert them to cash, and it would take some time. It was during this time that he borrowed money from a merchant.

Second, the passage posits that the recorded conversations between the Chevalier and a famous writer, Voltaire, cannot be accurate because it was written many years later. The professor contends with this point by saying that there are evidences that show that the Chevalier wrote everything down each night after the conversations and then he has kept these notes for many years. Also, witnesses say that he always consulted his notes when writing.

Third, The author claims that the Chevalier's scape from a prison was not by using a metal to create a hole in the ceiling as he claims, but was by means of using his powerful friends and bribery. The professor opposes this point by saying that there were other prisoners with powerful friends and none of them was able to escape. Also, according to an old government document, the prison's ceiling got repaired just after the Chevalier's escape, confirming his claim about creating a hole in the ceiling to escape.
