The reading passage is about working hours which many employees are willing to work a four- day week and getting less pay. In the listening passage, the speaker disagrees with this and shows that it would not be a proper decision for companies.
First, the reading says that the policy of working a four-day workweek for 80 percent of normal pay will decrease the costs of company and increases the profit because the workers feel more rest and alert. The speaker rejects this point and claims that hiring new staffs would have extra cost such as training, medical care, more office space, and computer instead of benefit.
Next, the reading states that working four day in a week with 80 percent of salary will diminish the unemployment rate in a society. The lecturer casts doubt on this idea and indicates that because of additional cost of hiring new staffs the companies tries to apply other options like working overtime. So the employees will be required to finish same amount of works as they did in the past.
The final point in the reading passage is that the option of four-day workweek would be a decent opportunity for employees who afford a lower salary. Because they can spend time to be with their families. In contrast, the lecturer holds this opinion that working less time in a week will decrease the quality of life because such employees would be prone to loss their job and the probability of promotion will be decrease.
