Turing test

Essay topics:

Turing test

The reading passage is about Turing Test which is a kind of test to indicate weather computer think or not, while the professor in the listening passage states some reasons which challenge the idea that any computer can think.

In the Turing test a group of people are asked to interact with the thing which they do not know if it is human or computer. The people type or ask some question and wait for answer; if the person cannot determine the opposite side is another person or a computer, the computer will pass the test. Up to know, any computer could not pass the Turing Test successfully.

In the listening passage, however, the professor challenged the validity of Turing Test by using Chinese room. In this example a monolingual person who speaks English was chose to answer Chinese question. Although the English speaker does not know Chinese, he could answer questions according to references without understanding of meaning. The professor claims that a computer can do the same thing as well; so when a computer answer a question correctly with the resources which it has, it is not thought, it is a behavior. In this case, the computer could act intelligently without being intelligent.
