Employees in the US work five days per week in forty hours. A governmental proposal suggests four days work in exchange for four-fifths salaries arouses benefits for companies and wholly for the country economy for a couple of reasons. However, the professor highly criticized the idea.
firstly, the state postulates the new law increases company profits by shortening human errors and having a more concentrated workforce and avoiding overworked employees. The lecturer denies this idea by stating less work force grows hiring more workforce which inherently requires more spaces, accommodation, and computers. Moreover, the costs of insurance coverages incured by employer consider equally to four days and five days workforces. Also hiring process of workers are costly and companies waste resources to examine newer workers.
secondly, the governmental experts assumed less working hours would lead to devoting more time for family and seeking private interests and enjoying leisure in comparison to five days workers, which in turn increases productivity. The professor also denounces this argument that this in longrun would not be necessarily true. If company decides to release the workforce, it prefers four days workers lose job. In case of promotions, company managers prefer give this opportunity to person with higher level of responsibility and continuous coverage for supervisanry abilities, which is more likely to be available in five days employers.
