In today's scenario, many people believe that writing letters is no more required and that latest technology has overpowered it. I totally agree with the above statement.
In my viewpoint, recent developments in communication no longer imposes a need for people to communicate through letters. Earlier, letter writing was the only medium for them to contact their near and dear ones. However, this has been drastically overtaken by advanced modes of communication like gadgets, computers etc. Apparently, these are considered more reliable, safe and quickest means to communicate. In a matter of few minutes, we can contact anyone with our handy and convenient mobile phone. Another feather in the cap is the social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter which has brought people together globally. On the other hand, if we talk about letters it takes a couple of days to reach the recipient. Not only people are suspicious about its delivery but also about the secrecy of information. From cost perspective also, e-communication saves a lot of paper which will affect the economy as well.
On the contrary, with a vast number of ageing population, most of which are not tech savvy, writing letters is the only option left. This group of elderly people find it more easy to express their thoughts on paper. Moreover, due to health issues like weak eye sight etc they are unable to sit for prolonged hours in front of the computer.
To recapitulate, albeit modern means of communication are a boon for the society yet it would be unfair to conclude that letter writing is no more required. Total dependency on the former would only limit ourselves and make us less self reliant.
