tpo 34 the elephant- size dinosaur
The reading and lecture talk about the ability of the elephant-size dinosaur to survive the harsh condition in arctic climate on Alaska's North slope. The reading states that many paleontologists have suggested that the edmontosaur survived the winter by migrating south to more hospitable regions and provides three reasons for support. However, the lecture explains that the reading's reasons are unconvincing, and casts doubt on each one of them.
First of all, the reading points out that dinosaurs would have migrated to find food because in winter no plants could grow in dark and cold North slope. The professor opposes this point. The professor mentions that the arctic climate was warmer than it is today, and it was sunny 24 hours a day in the summer. As a result, the plants grew heavily in the summer and dinosaurs had a lot of nutritious dead plants during the winter.
Secondly, the article claims that many edmontosaur skeletons have been found in the same site which means that they would have lived in herds. Living in herds supported that they migrated because many of the modern animals prefer to migrate in herds. The lecturer opposes this point by saying that animals live in herds for many reasons such as the protection even if they live in the same area all the time. He adds that many of the modern animals live in herd for this reason and they do not migrate.
Lastly, the author points out that edmontosaurs had the physical ability that helped them migrate. The professor refutes this point by stating that juvenile animals could not travel for long distances and adults could not leave them behind. As a result, the whole herd had to remain with juveniles.
