While Mandarin Chinese is the language with the greatest number of native speakers according to some statistics, English still happens to be the language spoken by the greatest number of non-native speakers, with about 250-350 million non-native speakers. Moreover, English is the language with the most number of distinct words at approximately 250,000 words and is also the most widely published language. Authors Mohamed Tahir Talib and Norzimah Ismail, who trained and worked as English teachers, now publish English Proficiency: Book 1, a valuable aid to proficiency in the language.

As English language teachers in Malaysia, authors Norzimah Ismail and Mohamed Tahir Talib compile English proficiency exercises that will lead students to mastery of the English language. They have encountered many hindrances in using these exercises fully and effectively with their classroom students. Firstly, they were tied down by the constraints of the Government Syllabus. The insufficient teaching time was another factor.

As fluency in spoken English is the objective of these lessons, the answers must be in oral form. The authors discourage the idea of giving too much emphasis on written words when they know that 99.9 percent of the words used in everyday life come from the mouth and not from the hands and pen. At the very least, their book aims to improve their readers’ skill in the use of English not only in written words but most especially on how they speak it.

English Proficiency: Book is a valuable guide for children and tuition students that will help them achieve an A1 in all their examinations. It is a compilation of notes the authors accumulated from more than 35 years of teaching the language to non-English speaking students and have been tried and tested on thousands of students who have become successful English speakers.
