The table below shows the proportion of different categories of families living in poverty in Australia in 1999, singled aged person, aged couple, single, no children, couple, no children, sole parent, couple with children and all households.

Firstly, sole parent had the highest percentage of 21% (232,000) proportion of people living in poverty. Follow by single, no children which has a percentage of 19% (359,000), couple with children of 12% (933,000), all households of 11% (1837,000), couple, no children of 7% (211,000), single aged person of 6% (54,000) and lastly aged couple of 4% (48,000).

When comparing categories under single with categories under couple, categories under single always has a higher percentage than couple. For instance, single aged person with aged couple, single, no children with couple, no children, and sole parent with couple children. From the table, we can also see that in Australia in 1999 there are more families under the categories of couple with children as there are 933,000 out of the total of 1837,000 families.

In conclusion, from the information from the table, we can assume that being single can lead to a high possibility of living in poverty, and the reason can be due to there is only one income in the family to live on.
