The bar chart presents the number of prisoners in five countries from 1930 to 1980.

Obviously, Canada and United States had the most number of prisoners in this period. There was a fluctuation of the figures of both countries. The amount of prisoner in Canada was about 120,000 in 1930, and then decreased to almost 100,000 in 1980. Whilst United States started with 100,000 prisoners in 1930 but then jumped to more than 130,000 the next year. The figured dropped in 1950. However it increased in 1960 and dropped again in 1970 before hitting the highest point of over 140,000 prisoners, highest number among five countries in 1980.

On the other hand, Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand showed the lower figures of the number of people in jail. The number of prisoners in Great Britain rose gradually year to year from about 30,000 in 1930 to nearly 90,000 in 1980. Meanwhile, Australia and New Zealand showed the volatile numbers for imprisonment during the period. Interestingly, the figures of three countries were almost the same at above 80,000 in 1980.

As a whole, there were a high number of imprisonment in United States and Canada compared with Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand.
