Overall, the proportion of the population living in cities in all survey areas as well as whole world in 2000 have significant rise in comparison with 1950. It is forecasted to increase further by 2030.
In 1950, the percentage of urban dwellers in the world stood at 30%, but by 2000 almost half of the world’s population lived in urban areas. By 2030 the figure is expected to rise to 60%. Latin America had the highest proportion of people living in cities and towns, rising from roughly 40% in 1950 to 70% in 2000, with a predicted further increase to 80% in 2030.
The figures and trends for Africa and Asia are similar. In 1950, about 12% of the population in Asia is urban dwellers while the figure for Africa is lower with 11%. However, in 2000, both Africa and Asia registered the same figure for the rate of urban population that is nearly 40%. By 2030, the figures of Africa and Asia are projected to continue to rise and reach 50% and 55%, respectively.
