The bar chart compares the proportion of families owning and renting accommodation in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.
Overall, more households had their own dwellings for 93 years, while the figures for rented accommodation showed the opposite trend in the same period.
In the year 1918, the number of households renting housing accounted for nearly 80%, which was about 4 times as much as that of the owning figure. After 21 years, the disparity between the two categories was slightly narrowed, with approximately 70% for renting families and about 32% for the other group. The two figures remained relatively unchanged for the following 14 years.
In 1971, the percentage of dwellers having their own houses increased sharply to a similar point in the renting group proportion, 50% each. By 2001, the figure for household owning accommodation had risen dramatically by nearly 20% before decreasing to 65% in 2011. By contrast, although hitting a bottom of around 30% in 2001, the percentage of renting households reached 35% at the end of the period.
