The bar graph illustrates the proportion of households in owned and rented accommodation in Britain and Wales during 1918 and 2011.
Overall, it is clearly seen that, the demand for rented accommodation declined during the period. Furthermore, the need for owned accommodation rose during the years.
In 1918, almost 80% of the people lived in rented houses, whereas, only above a fifth of the population owned a house. Over the next 35 years, the proportion of rented accommodation gradually decreased, while the figures for owned accommodation steadily increased, and by 1953 the figures were around 70% and 30%.By 1971 both rented and owned accommodation were used by 50% of the population.
However, after 1971, there was an opposite trend in the growth. In 1981, 60% of the people owned their own houses, while the figures for rented accommodation declined to 40%. Over the next 20 years, the proportion of owned accommodation rose to around 70% in 1991 and 2001, before withdrawing to around 65% in 2011. Similarly, during 1991 and 2001 the percentage of rented accommodation withnessed a steady growth, and by 2011 it jumped to around 35%.
