The chart reveals the proportion of families in owned and rented house in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.
In year 1918, the number of households rented houses was the highest, with 78% households rented accommodation. It is clear that the proportion of households that rented accommodation steadily decreased from 1939 to 1961. By 1971, the percentage of households that rented accommodation dropped to 50%, which was equal to the percentage of households that owned accommodation. The percentage of households rented accommodation reduced to 35% in 2001, which was less than the half of the year 1918.
On the other hand, there were more households that lived in owned accommodation than that lived in rent accommodation after 1971. In 1991 and 2001, the number of household owned accommodation reached the peak, and the household lived in owned accommodation doubled those lived in rent accommodation. However, the difference in 1981 and 2011 were less prominent, when about 60% households owned accommodation.
In conclusion, while there was a gradual increase in proportion of households owned accommodation, fewer households rented accommodation in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.
