The charts below show the levels of participation in education and science in developing and industrialised countries in 1980 and 1990.

The charts compare developing and industrialised countries in terms of the average years of schooling, the numbers of scientists and technicians and the money spent on research and development.

Overall, the figures for industrialised countries were much higher than those for developing countries. The charts also illustrate increases in participation, except in the spending aspect.

In 1980, people in developing countries attended school for an average of nearly 3 years and this figure just increased slightly over the decade. Meanwhile, the figures for industrialised countries rose from almost 9 years to more than 10 years.

After 10 years, the number of scientists and technicians in developed countries saw a significant growth, from just above 40 to around 70 per 1000 people. Likewise, the money spent on research and development in those countries almost doubled (from above $150 billion to around $350 billion). By contrast, in developing countries, the numbers of specialists in this field was just under 20 per 1000 and the spending fell from $50 billion to only about $25 billion.
