The charts below show the percentage of their food budget the average family spent on restaurant meals in different years. The graph shows the number of meals eaten in fast food restaurants and sit-down restaurants.

The pie charts compare the proportion of families eating at restaurants and cooking at home, from 1970 to 2000. The line graph gives information about the number of food consumption in fast food restaurants and sit-down restaurants in the different years.

Overall, it is clear that a general increasing trend was seen in food budget at restaurants throughout the period of forty years, mainly in both mentioned restaurants.

Looking at the first graph, in 1970, food consumption at restaurants accounted for 10%, this figure then grew slightly to 15% in 1980. After two decades, the number of food eaten at restaurants has risen significantly to at 35% by 1990 and 50% by 2000 respectively. It seems that families tended to like eating at restaurants, they might avoid wasting time in cooking.

Turning to the second chart, as can be seen, both types of meals show a similar trend. Standing at the same point of 20 in 1970, the number of fast food meals rose steadily to approximately 50, while the figure increased considerably to nearly 90 in terms of sit-down restaurant meals, to the last year of the period of 40 years.
