Overall, the majority of British students knew at least one foreign language. Over the period given, the number of students who were able to speak two other languages, another language or only English increased, whereas French and Spanish had opposite trends. The proportion of German-speaking students remained the same.
In England, 30% of students communicated only in English, 2000. The number grew to 35 by 2010. Similarly, the percentage of students who spoke two other languages and another language saw an increase by 5 % each.
In contrast, French and Spanish became less popular. The proportion of these categories decreased from 15% and 20% to 10% and 10%, respectively. Of British students 10% could speak German, in 2000, and this number saw no change by 2010.
