Eating sweet foods produces acid in the mouth, which can cause tooth decay. (High acid levels are measured by low pH values)Describe the information below and discuss the implications for dental health
The given linear graph illustrates the effect of two different types of sugar as well as honey on the risk of tooth decay. According to the graph, the two types of sugar (fruit and cane) and honey commence acidic activity in the mouth soon after they are eaten.
It is clearly seen that the PH level in the mouth declines considerably five minutes after the consumption of any of these sugars. Of these, the acidity level is seen the maximum in case of cane sugar, when it registers a PH of almost 3.5. In case of fruit sugar, it is around 4.25 and in case of honey it is about 4.75, which is the lowest. In general, honey is the least harmful sweeteners to tooth compared to fruit and sugar cane as it requires the shortest time to alter the mouth acidity. While consuming these sweeteners decreases Ph level, honey shows the least decreases among other sweet foods.
However, the highest risk is seen after having sugarcane (3-33 minutes). It is also seen that honey neutralizes faster than the other two sugars and Mouth recovers faster from undesirable acidity when honey is consumed. This takes only 20 minutes, which is 10 minutes lesser than fruit sugar. Nevertheless, cane sugar takes about 35 minutes to neutralize after its consumption.
