In overview, road works was reported to have a decline in complaining reports, while three others, traffic noise, factories, and domestic/household experienced upward trends in the numbers of complaints.
In more details, in 1980, road works became the most noisy factor to Environmental Health authorities in Newton, surveyed at above 600 complaints, and then it underwent a dramatic decrease at about 50 complaints in 1996, being the least noise source among others. Meanwhile, two other noise factors, traffic noise and household, were recorded to have similar patterns with different details in the numbers of complaints. It was shown that both had stable numbers from 1980 to 1984, and experienced a slight decrease in 1986, further had sharp rises in 1996 at 600 complaints of traffic noise, and above 1200 complaints of domestic, being the highest numbers among others.
