The line graph depicts the change in the levels of contamination with sulfur dioxide and smoke in London from 1600 to 2000.
Overall, the amounts of both contaminants followed a similar trend, but the levels of sulphur dioxide were higher than those of the smoke. As regards the first, the content of sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere increased considerably from almost 0 to more than 750 micrograms by the first quarter of 18 century. It was followed by another peak of approximately 880 micrograms in 1850. By contrast, the air in London contained nearly 30 micrograms of smoke in 1580. However, then the levels of pollution were increasing gradually until the late 1800s, reaching a critical point of 400 micrograms per cubic meter. Finally, the levels of sulfur dioxide and smoke pollution fell dramatically by the end of the 20th century.
The considerable decrease during the last 200 years included wild fluctuations in the contents of both pollutants. London’s atmosphere had the levels of sulfur oxide changing repeatedly in the range of 125 to 550 micrograms per cubic meter. Meanwhile, the content of smoke fluctuates sharply between about 100 and 380 micrograms in one cubic meter. After 75 years of fluctuations, the people in London inhaled almost zero sulfur oxide and smoke by 2000.
In general, it is obvious that, though the amounts of sulphur oxide and smoke in London were increasing from 16th to the end of 19th century, the degree of air pollution in London now is sufficiently less than 200 years ago.
