In 1975, men and women employed in manufacturing numbered around 650000 and 300000, respectively. This sector experienced no change in employment 20 years later. Similarly, the public sector (non-defence) also remained stable for both sexes, with a difference of nearly 200000 between them.
In contrast, by 1975, female employment in communications rose dramatically from almost 300000 to nearly double, while finance and banking saw a three-fold increase. Public sector (defence) comprised the least number of women in both periods, at just a little under 100000.
On the other hand, male employment remained stagnant in the manufacturing, communications, wholesale and retail, and public sector (non-defence) sectors. Male workers in finance and banking slightly increased from a little over 400000 to just under 450000, while the public sector (defence) saw a small drop in male employees by the end of 1975.
