The best way to solve the world s environmental problems is to increase the cost of fuel To what extent do you agree or disagree

Many people argue that increasing the price of fuel is the most effective measure to address the problems of the environment. While this approach can potentially reduce emissions by encouraging individuals to use fewer private vehicles, I believe that a global awareness campaign would be a more practical way to address the root causes of environmental problems.
On the one hand, raising fuel costs might decrease the amount of carbon dioxide emitted in cities to a certain extent. In reality, vehicles release vast amounts of noxious fumes into the atmosphere every second, contributing to air pollution. These fumes contain a variety of harmful chemicals, such as nitrogen oxides and particulate matter, which have negative impacts on the environment. Requiring individuals to pay more for their journeys can encourage them to rely less on their private vehicles, and to use more environmentally-friendly modes of transportation, such as public transport or electric bikes. Following the Singapore government's 20% increase in fuel prices in 2018, the Land Transport Authority reported a 2.2% increase in bus ridership in the first quarter compared to the same period in 2017. Consequently, harmful emissions will be limited, leading to less air pollution.
However, this measure does not fully address the underlying causes of environmental problems. Furthermore, these issues can stem from various factors, including the use of plastic bags while shopping or the use of noxious chemicals in the agricultural and industrial sectors, contaminating both land and water. Therefore, the most effective approach would be running a worldwide program to raise consumers' awareness of the importance of environmental costs. According to the Land Transport Authority, after the Singaporean government implemented a 20% increase in fuel prices in 2018, there was a 2.2% increase in daily bus ridership in the first quarter compared to the same period in 2017. This can consequently limit harmful emissions, leading to a lower air pollution rate.
In conclusion, while increasing fuel prices can cut emissions to some extent by discouraging individuals from using private vehicles, a global awareness campaign will be a more effective measure to mitigate the underlying causes of this problem. I am also convinced that once this approach is implemented, there will be more people perceiving the importance of environmental protection, contributing to the reduction of environmental issues.
