Nowadays marketing and advertising control customers in the way that producers need. Some people hold the opinion that consumerism exists only because of strongly managing product promotion and affects poorly on customers' way of life. Moreover, artificially increased consumption has a lot of negative consequences on the environment. However, the commercial might have a positive influence on society.
The main reason why marketing is such popular tool on today's market is that manufacturers have researched customer behaviour clearly and learnt to manage it by lots of psychological tricks. For example, super-markets use lighting to highlight products that want to sell faster. Additionally, shops use smells, colours of floors and walls for zoning the space and attract clients. As a result, all this tips work such as a knock-on-effect and force visitors to buy more expensive and useless stuff which is only a tip of the iceberg. Because of consumerism communities spend natural resources unthinkingly and it could lead to a shortage of food, water and environmental pollution.
On the other hand, advertisement today uses not only to sell products, but to attract society's attention to world problems such as global warming or the problem of animal extinction. For instance, excellent promotion of pandas lifestyle helped to collect donations and allowed them to survive. Also publicity works with people in need or with difficult illnesses. Therefore, it is important to run promotions as a quick fix of world problems such as global warming, oceans pollution and wildfires.
To conclude, the question of advertisement effect on people's life is the difficult one to answer definitively. However, based on reasons analysed above, I believe that promotion is a strong instrument which could manage customer behaviour and affects not only on a person's way of life but on the environment in general.
