animals' bahavior

Essay topics:

animals' bahavior

The article states that there are some by evidences; result from a series of experiments, which proofs that animals have a sense of self-awareness. The professor cast doubt on the given reasons in the reading by explaining that there is not a reasonable definition for animals' behavior; moreover, she posits that there is a difference between the two terms self-awareness and self-recognition.

First, the reading claims that we could conclude that chimpanzees are able to recognize themselves in mirrors when they stand in front of it and groom themselves or in case they used the mirror to explore some parts of their bodies they normally could not see. On the contrary, The lecturer illustrates that we are not sure whether this types of behavior like grooming are just social behaviors or they are reacting of self-awareness. She made the point that some experiments show, there is not any difference in animals' behavior that proofs that monkeys groom when they recognize themselves in mirror, Sometimes when they see other spices throughout a window they do the same behavior when there is a mirror in front of them.

Second, the reading proposes that by doing "mark test" we could test the animals' self-recognition ability. However, the professor opposes this point by explaining that there are some basic problems with this test. She says that there are much routine behaviors for animals, so they do them whether there is a mirror in front of them or not. And just touching a red mark on their bodies do not proof anything.
