In the reading, the author claims that dinosaurs were endotherms and by pointing out three reasons of support. However, finding all the ideas questionable and implausible, the lecturer repudiates the claim and presents some evidence on the contrary.
At first, the author argues that dinosaur fossils were found in Polar Regions where maintaining body temperature is necessary to be active in such cold. The professor refutes the point by saying that the areas, where the fossils were found, were warmer during that time. Moreover, dinosaurs could have migrated or hibernated to get rid of the cold.
In addition, the article posits that the leg position of dinosaur is similar to modern endotherms which can run efficiently using its legs. However, the professor says that the legs might have positioned in that way to support the huge weight of dinosaur and it has nothing to do with endothermy. So, he thinks that endothermy of dinosaur cannot be inferred from leg placement.
Finally, the author asserts that Haversian canal in dinosaur bones clear indicate its' endothermy. The author opposes this point by explaining that dinosaurs have growth ring which stops growth or make the growth slower in cold climates. He also states that endotherms grow rapidly in any condition. As the dinosaurs show rapid growth sometimes and no growth sometimes, according to the professor, it can not be endotherms.
- Endotherms are animals such as modern birds and mammals that keep their body temperatures constant. For instance, humans are endotherms and maintain an internal temperature of 37°C, no matter whether the environment is warm or cold. Because dinosaurs wer 81
