The author claims that franchise gives huge benefits than starting a new business. The lecturer casts doubt on claims made in the article. He believes that self business is more profitable than work with franchise companies.
First of all, the article implies that start of the business owner needs trustworthy supplier for product and service. It is unfortunate for owner if he choose wrong supplier. But franchise has reliable supplier so, it eliminate the serious loss of money by the supplier. The lecturer, in contrast, mentions that franchise company contract with owner to buy specific good and services which has huge cost. Although outside supplier gives cheaper service, owner cannot but that service. So, services from the franchise company costly for owner.
Secondly, Even though article emphasizes that advertisement of product by the parent company, thus owner save money of advertisement, the speaker disagree with this point because franchise make agreement with owner to receive 6% total sell of money by owner. This 6% uses for advertisement and this advertise to not only for owner but also their company name, brand product and various franchises. Owner gets little benefit from 6% instead he can half of money uses for his own product, so he gets the huge profit from them.
Finally, the article states that franchises protect from the high rate failure in starting business. This point challenged by professor. He points out that it is true that it prevent the risk from failure. But, owner but business from exist other owner, so he gets twice success than previous owner in first to four years.
