new kind of broccoli on the east coast

Essay topics:

new kind of broccoli on the east coast

The passage presents some potential advantages of growing a new type of broccoli on the East Coast of the United States. The lecturer, however, remains unconvinced, and she refutes all the arguments that are present in the reading. She claims the new broccoli might not be as successful as its creators persume. Her further demonstrations are as follows.

First, although it is true that the new broccoli produced on the East Coast will cause a decline in transportation costs, this does not necessarily mean a lower sale price for consumers. While the new broccoli is resisant to hot summers, it has also lower yields. Thus, farmers have smaller quantity of products per acre, and subsequently, they need to set a higher price for broccoli to make profit. Collectively, consumer costs are not likely to differ.

Second, even though the new broccoli will be created by the employment of traditional breeding techniques, the public will probably remain suspicious. The funding for this project is provided by the companies that previously produced genetically modified crops. Hence, people are inclined to distrust a product that is created under the supervision of these companies regardless of their claim about application of traditional breeding methods in this project.

Finally, whereas broccoli indeed contains most of its beneficial nutrients right after it is cut, this does not provide reasonable support for growing a new type of broccoli on the East Coast. There are a variety of other vegetables that can be readily grown on the East Coast with comparative or even more health advantages, such as cale, which can grow on the East Coast all year long. Instead of creating a new type of broccoli, we should encourage people to consume other vegetables that are equally beneficial and naturally cultivated on the East Coast.
