Rembrandt painting

Essay topics:

Rembrandt painting

The reading and the lecture are both about one of the Rembrandt paintings including the face of an elderly woman. The author of the reading suggests that although, the woman's face resembles to Rambrant's portraits, but there is 3 reason to present that it could not be the Rembrant's paintings. The lecturer challenges these claims. He is of the opinion that these assertion are correct.

First, the writer contends that there is something incampatible about the woman' dress. there is inconsistency between a linen cap that it is worn only by servants and fur collar that any servant could not pay for it, even though Renbrant would pay attention to details of his character's clothing. This argument is challenged by the lecturer. He says that according to analyst the fur collar was not part of the original painting and maybe it was added by another person several years after the time of painting by Rembrant.

Secondly, the author asserts that there is something wrong with light and shadow in this painting whereas Renbrandt was expert in painting of light and shadow. The lecturer, however, rebuts this argument by mentioning that the original portrait is very realistic so that the white cluff lighten the woman' face.

Finally, it is stated in the article that the panel of this portrait is made of several pieces of wood connected together with glue , but Rembrandt's painting were often on one piece of wood. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that wood pieces is added to increase the size of the painting by others later as well as the fur collar.
