Since, the sea otters play an significant ecological role in coastal ecosystem, the reduction in sea otters population has been critical issue. In the reading passage, it affirms that the possible reason of reduced number of otters is because of environmental pollution rather than predation. In contrast to it, the lecture advocates predation to be more reasonable for the reduction of sea mammals including sea otters.
Firstly, in the passage, it has explained that there are sources of pollution to nearer to the coastal regions such as oil rigs and other chemical pollution. These must have surged the level of chemicals in the water leading to the reduced number of sea otters. However, the lecture questions if pollution was the main reason behind the reduction then why their dead bodies were not found in the water. Therefore, this weakens the first theory.
Secondly, in the passage, it is explained that Ocra only hunts the larger sea mammals like whales so, there is no other guess that decrease in the population of sea otters along with other sea mammals like sea lion, seals etc is because of pollution. Nevertheless, the lecture sticks with predation describing disappearance of whales from the sea because of which ocras have to attack smaller sea mammals. This undermines the second theory of the passage.
Thirdly, in the passage, the ocean currents and other environmental factors are taken into account for the reduction of sea mammals. In the other hand, the lecture claims that the uneven pattern of sea mammals is due to ocra predation theory. As ocras are huge predators, they cannot survive in the shallow sea water. Thus, in the shallow sea, the population of sea mammals is constant. In the same way, in the deep sea, the population is highly decreased due to predation. Hence, this counters the third theory of the passage.
Thus, it is confirmed that the reduction of sea otters and sea mammals is because of predation rather than environmental pollution.
