The lecturer disputes the idea that working four days a week in stead of five days is beneficial to the economy and may increase companies profits. He asserts that there are a couple of drawbacks caused by the shortening the number of working days, so he refutes his claims.
First, the lecturer argues that there are other hidden costs after hiring more employees in spite of paying the same amount of wages . The author claims that companies would benefit from having employees working four days instead of five days because workers become more alert and they can avoid mistakes at work. However, the lecturer states that having more employees means that there is a need for more office space. Beside, the bills of medical insurance would also be higher. Thus the total companies spending's will increase.
Second, the lecturer contends that implementing a four days working schedule policy does not necessarily creates more jobs. He says that companies would require their employees to work overtime to compensate for the shortage of employees and will raise their expectations about productivity. Thus, economically speaking, this policy will not create more jobs and reduce the unemployment rates
Finally, the lecturer argues that employees will not have a better quality of life. He asserts that it is true that working four days a week instead of five will give employees more time to do their leisure activities. However, at the same time, it may stop their chances of being promoted to a better position. Moreover, such policy would not only result in hindering employee's promotion, but would also cause them to lose their jobs if companies decides to down size because of poor economy.
