The reading and the lecture are both about that nowadays people are reading less than in the past, which have some negative consequences. The author believes that the effects of reading less literature or poems could decline the culture in general. The professor brings into question the claims made in the article. He considers that it is not true that reading less is affecting the culture, and even he highlights the good points of this fact.
First, the author comes up with the idea that the intellectual stimulation could be threatened because of reading less literature. It is mentioned that literature makes people more imaginative. However, the lecturer argues that there is no reason to believe that just with literature you can build up the imagination, so there are more kinds of books to go through where you can find out how to blow up your mind.
Second, the author states that people are drawn about self-help books now, as a result, they do not worry about reading novels because they have other sources of entertainment such as TV, Music, and among others. Meanwhile, the professor rebuts this argument by pointing out that we find in music or movies some values and thus understand the real meaning of the new culture, which provides more available sources of information.
Finally, the author contends that literature is not much appreciated today by people. Furthermore, there is no support for some good writers and for that poor texts are coming out for readers. The professor, on the other hand, posits that today there is more support than previously and therefore more books as well. He puts forth the idea that these days past literature is difficult to understand, so people prefer more concise and well-explained literature.
