The reading states that the subject of a portrait is Jane Austin and provide three reasons of support. However, the professor claims that the reasons of the Article is not convincing and refutes each of the reasons.

First, the reading states that Austin's family recognized her in the portrait and it shows that the subject of the portrait is her. the professor opposes this point by saying that Austin family recognize Austin's portrait 70 years after her death. her family had never seen her alive in that age. Accordingly, this evidence cannot prove that the subject of the portrait is Austin or not.

Second, the article states that the face of the subject in the portrait is similar to Cassandra's sketch. However, the professor believes that Austin had several female teenage cousins that could be subject of Cassandra's sketch. The professor mentions that actually it is accepted that the subject of the portrait is Marry Caumpin who was a distant niece of Cassandra.

Third, the reading avers that even though the painting has not any date, there is evidence that it was painted when Austin was a teenager. The professor refutes this point by saying that the black canvas that was used in the portrait was for William Lag and when William started his job Autin was 27 years old. As a result, the canvas used for portrait clarifies the fact that Austin was older than the girl depicted on the portrait.
