TPO-14 - Integrated Writing Task Every year, forest fires and severe stormscause a great deal of damage to forests in the northwestern United States. One way of dealing with the aftermath of these disasters is called salvage logging, which is the practice

The reading and the lecture both discuss salvage logging which is removing of the dead trees after a natural catastrophe. The author of the reading believes that salvage logging had lots of advantages for economy and jungles. The lecturer cast doubt on the claims made in the reading. He thinks that salvage logging has adverse long term environmental effects and also it is not beneficial for the economy as mentioned in the reading.
To begin with, the author of the passage pushes forth the idea that cramped tree after a wildfire would not allow other tree to grow up. It is mentioned that salvage logging replace the dead trees and make enough room for new generation to build up there. In the lecture the professor has completely different attitude towards this point. She asserts that decomposing of the dead trees will enrich the sand which can provide nutrition for new trees to grow up, so salvage logging will deprive the sand of nutrition which are vital for sand.
Furthermore, the reading passage contends that by cleaning dead trees most of insects which cause massive damage to trees would disappear. It notes that the infection due to insects decreases significantly. While the lecturer believes that not only the removed insects are not all harmful but also almost of them are beneficial for the environment. She says that dead trees are also the habitats for birds which salvage logging remove them and endanger its life.
Finally, the reading states that salvage logging brings the society appreciable economical benefits and would make lots of job due to massive need of workers. This point is challenged by the professor he claims that economy will benefit small amount because such tools which carry and move dead trees are expensive to be used. She says that increased demand of worker is temporary and will not last long.
