TPO-15 - Integrated Writing Task The cane toad is a large (1.8 kg) amphibian species native to Central and South America. It was deliberately introduced to Australia in 1935 with the expectation that it would protect farmers' crops by eating harmful insec

The reading passage contends that there are several measures that been proposed to prevent the spread of the cane toad in Australia, a large amphibian species native to Central and South America, which makes small native animals being threatened. On the other hand, the lecturer brings about several points that contradict this argument.
First of all, the lecturer questions the measure in the reading passage suggested that building a national fence would prevent the spread of the toad. This is attributed to the fact that the eggs of the toad have laid on near river and stream. It makes them to carry out through other sides in Australia. Even a national fence is built, the spread would not be protected. Thus, the reading passage’s first point is invalid.
Moreover, the lecturer casts doubt on the measure made in the reading passage that volunteers are capable to capture and destroy the toads. This is because it is true that they are able to capture and destroy the toads. However, untrained volunteers also would capture and destroy native species, which makes original habitats being damaged. Consequently, the reading passage’s second point is contradicted.
Last but not least, the lecturer disagrees with the measure made by the reading passage that a disease which is developing by researchers and cause virus is able to control the toad populations. It is obvious that it would cause terrible situations all over the habitats because the virus would be transferred and other species also are damaged by the virus. For example, in South America, many researchers had applied the virus like this. However, this virus made original habitats devastated and native species there declined. Eventually, their whole ecology did damaged by the virus. As a result, with the reasoning, the reading passage’s final proposed measure is refuted.
