TPO-17 - Integrated Writing Task In the past century, the steady growth of the human population and the corresponding increase in agriculture and pesticide use have caused much harm to wildlife in the United States, birds in particular. Unfortunately for b

The reading passage states that because of the increase in the human population and also the subsequent growth in agriculture and pesticides implementation, wildlife has damaged in the United States. Mainly, birds influenced the most among other species, and if this trend continues, the number of birds eventually will decline. The passage provides three reasons for supporting this idea. However, the lecturer casts serious doubts on this claim and believes that none of these reasons are convincing enough and refutes all the reasons.
First, the reading declares that because of the growth of the human population, natural habitats of birds will soon disappear. The professor, on the other hand, disagrees and makes the argument that birds will have larger habitat and this may increase their population. She comments that the population of some birds may shrink, but most others will find more place to live and also hunt.
Second, although the reading posits that the increase of the agricultural activities will result in the further destruction of birds habitat, the lecturer says that there are some new attempts to change this problem. As there is progress for using less land for agriculture, some plants that produce more food were discovered and introduced to rural sites. Consequently, there is no need for destroying the traditional areas that birds might live.
Third, the reading passage asserts that chemical pesticides can harm birds because they might eat poisoned insects or drink contaminated water. Nonetheless, the professor thinks that people are aware of the consequences of using the pesticides and they made some changes to solve this problem. In fact, they tried to develop less toxic pesticides, and also pest resistant crops to overcome this matter.
