TPO-17 - Integrated Writing Task In the past century, the steady growth of the human population and the corresponding increase in agriculture and pesticide use have caused much harm to wildlife in the United States, birds in particular. Unfortunately for b

The article states birds populations will continue to decline and provides three reasons of supports. However, the professor states that the author's claim about birds populations is true but she refutes each of the author's reasons.

First, the reading avers that since human populations and settlements continue to exapndbirds habitats will continue to disapear as well. The professor, on the other hand, explains that this point is true but only for some birds species. She explains that building, housing areas are better habitat for large species of birds, such as pigions, hawks, and so on. Therefore, birds populations has increased with housing developments. The professor conculdes the decline in birds populations is not uniform as the author would like us to believe, but only on small birds species.

Second, the article claims that the growth of agricultura, as response to growing health populations, will also result in the further destruction of birds habitats. Conversely, the professor disagree with point by stating that the increase in agricultual activities are done by using less lands. The agriculte growth has already increased by inroducing of increased variety crops, so there is no need to convert and use wilderness areas for agricultural purpose.

Third, the reading posits that chemical pesticides gets into the water and into the food chains for birds where they can harm birds. Even they do not kill them, they effect their reproduction process. The professor refutes this point by saying that pesticides have been developed and will continue to do so in the future. This new pesticides differ from that in the past in two disntictive features: The first one, new productions of pesticides are less much toxic than before. Also, new forms to faciliate growing pesticides that resistant to pests, in addition to, become less harm to birds species.
