The reading and the speaker discuss the difficulty to control zebra mussel from its spreading out from its original habitats to North America from different perspectives. The speaker casts doubt on the claims made in the article. He thinks that three ideas, which the author of the reading has mentioned to support his idea are unconvincing.
First of all, the author of the reading point out that zebra cannot be controlled because it is carried to new habitats along the ships of Europe's waterways. This point is challenged by the speaker. He restates the fact that in the past people did not have enough knowledge to control the invasion of the zebra mussel. But now they probably can stop the invasion of the zebra mussel by emptying the ships in the ocean; therefore, salt water will kill the zebra mussel.
Secondly, the author of the reading contends that once the zebra brought to new habitats it will dominate those places because it has no predator. The speaker rebuts this idea by arguing that in the beginning the zebra mussels had no predator. However, now birds recognize that zebra mussel is a good food. They start to eat the zebra mussel. Thus, the zebra mussel cannot be dominated in those locations.
Finally, the author of the reading states that the zebra mussel causes the deterioration of overall fish population in those places that they are dominant. The speaker, on the other hand, opposes this point by saying that it is true that the zebra negatively impact on some kinds of fish. Nevertheless, there are some fishes in the bottom of the ocean can increase their populations base on the zebra mussel.
