The reading and the lecture discus Zebra mussels invasion in north America. Reading states that it can spread allover the area and dominate every habitats. The lecture refutes this point by stating that they cannot occupy all habitats, there are lot of ways to control it.

First of all, reading says that mussels which lives in fresh water aid them by means ballast water-useful for maintain the balance of ship during voyage, this available at bottom of the ship, that in turn gives chance for them survive. The great example is it happend in Europe in past. So, they can spread anywhere in the world. The lecture counter this point by saying that ballast can be emptied before reaching the America. Moreover, filling ocean water which will not allow it survive in salt water.

Secondly, passage claims that their reproductive capacity is very high at any given condition, plus, no predator-these helps mussels spread quickly. The professor reputes this view by saying that it may be true in beginning but some birds like to eat whatever available in the environment eventually the prey the mussels when it find out. So, they cannot spread allover the area.

Finally, reading suggests that it can dominate the any Eco system, for example, this population reduced much because mussels even eats plankton, that way it become competitor for fish. The professor opposes this statement by explaining that mussels which produce some nutrient stuff, fish like bottom-fish like eat more. So, they cannot dominate the lake areas as well.

To sum up, the reading says that mussels can spread everywhere because it use ballast-water, ability to survive in varieties of environment and competitor for some species like fish. But, the speaker refutes all these point with evidences.
