The lecture and reading both discuss motif of line appear in skeleton bones of fossil. Some paleontologists claim that this line represented the feather of Sinosauropteryx. According to the reading passage, many critics argue about the feather of dinosaur. The lecturer casts doubt the claims of reading passage. He says that evidence behind the skeleton bone strongly suggest that this were feather of the dinosaur and critics arguments are unconvincing.
First of all, the critics emphasizes that fine lines represent the skin fibers. When animal died than, it buried under the volcanic ash. Decomposed skin change in to fibers. The lecturer challenged this point made in the reading passage. He mentions that this line not fibers because of as same site many other fossils were presents but none of the fossil were decomposed. So, presence of volcanic ash does not change the fossil structure but well preserve functional structure.
Secondly, the critic argues that fossils were not feather but its frills. The lecturer rebuts the critic argument. He explains that frills and feathers had different composition. Beta carotene found in fossil which is present in feathers not in frill, therefore fossils was feathers of dinosaur.
Lastly, the critic states that fine line situated along with back bone and tail which were represented that its not feathers. Since feathers function was regulating temperature and fly, the structure are not made like this. The lecturer, in contrast, points out that birds and other animal also have different function of feather. For instance, the peacock has tail colorful feather to attract mate. As similarly, the Sinosauropteryx feathers has orange and white color suggest different function.
