The reading passage contents that there are three hypotheses about the purpose and meaning of carved stone balls that are a curious type of artifact found at a number of location in Scotland. On the other hand, the lecturer brings about several points that contradict this argument.
First of all, the lecturer questions the theory in the reading passage that in order to hunt or fight, people at that time used the carved stone balls. This is attributed to the fact that even thought the balls are cracked and separated, their surfaces are well preserved and not damaged. If those were used in hunting or fighting, the surfaces of those balls would be damaged; however, it is not. Thus, the reading passage’s first theory is invalid.
Moreover, the lecturer casts doubt on the hypothesis in the reading passage that in a primitive system of weights of measures, the carved stone balls were utilized. This is because it is true their size is nearly uniform, but they were made from different stone holding different density. in order to make the same stone with weight, all stone would be carved with the same stone. Consequently, the reading passage’s second theory is contradicted.
Last but not least, the lecturer disagrees with the theory in the reading passage that the carved stone balls were used for a social purpose. It is obvious that on the surfaces of the stone, there are two different designs, elaborate and simple designs. In addition, in order to mark social status of an owner, the carved stone would be found with tomb or other places which after the owner was buried. However, the stones were not discovered with any tombs. As a result, the reading passage’s last theory is refuted.
