The reading discusses several theories about the extinction of specific marine species called Steller's sea cow. However, the lecturer finds the ideas dubious and casts doubt on each theory proposed by the reading passage.
First, the author argues that they might have been overhunted by native people. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that they were so enormous and massive that they could feed many people while the number of people in that area was not that much, so they did not need overhunting these animals. Therefore, it is not reasonable that they became extinct by the native people.
Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that ecosystems' severe changes might have been the other reason for their decimation. On the contrary, the professor underlines the fact that if any environmental change had happened, it would have affected all the plants in the area, not just one type of them. As researchers did not find any declination in any other plant's population, it is highly unlikely that environmental changes caused this extinction.
Finally, the reading passage asserts that the root cause of extinction might have been hunting by traders who came from European countries. In contrast, the speaker dismisses the issue due to the fact that although the extinction has just happened after European traders entered the area, the population of these species had gone under intense decrease 100 years before. As a result, this theory also will be excluded due to its erroneous assumption.
