Based on the reading materials, the author stated that there are 3 evidences regarding that cloud seeding is an effective method in protecting crops from hail. However, the professor finds this idea bereft of sufficient reasoning and cites some ideas to the contrary.
Initially, the author argued that based on the laboratory experiments, cloud seeding is an effective method owing to the fact that by adding silver iodide to cold water vapor, scientists have seen that instead of hail, snow will be formed. However, the lecturer refuted this idea by stating that these laboratory experiments may be not effective in real life, because by adding silver iodide to cold water vapor, any precipitation, like snow, rain, and hail will form and these experiments can increase the risk of droughtness in those areas, which would be very harmful for crops.
Another point mentioned by the writer of the reading passage was that evidences from Asia have shown that this method is useful. In Asian countries, cloud seeding are used in urban areas and have some positive results showing that this method can be used to protect crops and farming fields in the United States. That being said, the professor repudiated this one too by clarifying that in Asian countries, this method is used in urban cities with high amount of air pollution. Air pollution can be favorable for cloud seeding, but in unpolluted areas this method is futile.
The final point discussed by the author was that local studies support the effectiveness of cloud seeding owing to the fact that scientists directly have observed that by using this method, the amount of damages to the crops due to hail is decreased. Yet again, the lecturer criticized this idea. She stated that this declination is not only in that area which this method is used, but also is in whole areas around that site, which would be as a result of natural weather conditions of the local area, not the cloud seeding method.
