Based on the given set of the reading material, the fossil information about the Agnostids, a group of marine animals living about 450 years ago, cannot yield in the details of how and when they lived. Firstly, the lecturer aknowledges that Agnoistids were similar to other types of primitive swimmer arthropods, but she believes that these mysterious species were not predators. That being said, the Agnostids had tiny poor eyes and some of them were actually blind. As a result, they might had some other special purpose organs to chase and catch their preys and this idea clearly opposes the fact that they were free-swiming predators.
Secondly, the speaker believes that seafloor dwellers mostly occupy small territories and they are more localized rather than spreading through the seafloor. These qualities are obviously attributed to the species which are not capable of moving fast on the seafloor. However, evidence illustrates that Agnostids were occupying multiple geographical areas in the sea and they were able to move quickly and easily through the sea. As a result, the advocations of the writer which Agnostids were seafloor dwellers seems to be unusual for these species.
Finally, the author suggests that Agnostids were parasites, living and feeding off larger ogranisms. The lecturer, on the other hand, deemed this idea invalid too. She believes that if the population of the parasites were too high, they might have killed their hosts. According to this fact, parasites were living in small populations. However, the vast amount of fossilized remnants of Agnostids demonstrate that they were living in large populations. This clearly rules out the third theory about agnostids.
To put it in a nutshell, the speaker goes against the ideas presented in the reading passage and she believes that some other hypothesis may account for the actual way that agnostids were living.
