The reading specifies that since the evaporation of water is faster than being replaced by rainfall or rivers, the level of salt in the Salton Sea is increasing constantly putting fish and bird populations in danger, and provides three ways to solve this problem. The professor, however, states that solutions are not realistic and practical and refutes them all.

First, based on the reading, one option is to pump water into facilities and after that by heating it, salt and other materials that are dissolved in the water left behind. Then by cooling down the evaporated steam, water is salt-free and is returned to the lake. In contrast, the lecturer explains that this process can cause serious problems. Solid materials that are solved in the water contain chemical and toxic materials. If these materials are spread by the wind in the air, breathing the air by people who work there, can harm them.

Second, the reading proposes that constructing pipelines and bringing ocean water into the lake and since it is less salty than the lake, can decrease the lake's salinity. Nevertheless, based on the professor, governments do not have enough money and resource for building pipelines. The distance of the ocean from the lake is one hundred kilometers which is a long distance and this solution is not possible.

Third, another procedure is to construct walls and divide the lake into multiple sections and in the main section controls and reduces the salinity. On the contrary, the professor states that many geological events happening in the region of the lake. It is plausible that the salinity of the lake is reduced in a short time however if an earthquake happens, the walls will collapse and different sections of water with low salt and high salt will be mixed again.
