TPO49-Humpback whales

Although the passage explains how humpback whales may navigate by stars, the professor in the lecture considers it not convincing.

First, there does not seem to be a connection between intelligence and the ability to use stars to navigate. The professor argues that the ability may not be developed but just an instinct, giving the example of some other less intelligent animals such as ducks and birds who take advantage of stars as navigation. Therefore, humpback whales may just happen to be able to use stars to navigate.

Second, other than stars' direction, there may be different explanations for humpback whales' migration in straight lines. Evidence suggests that there is a biomagnitite in the brain of whales, so they can rely on Earth magnetic field to provide them with external force by which to maintain direction over long distances.

Third, the behavior of spy-hopping is not necessarily connected with looking at the stars. Even if it is a rare behavior, there are still other animals in the nature practicing the same position. For example, sharks sometimes do this behavior, but they don't migrate or look at the stars at all, they just use this gesture to help them hunt. Also, whales are sometimes found floating straight up during day, when the stars cannot be seen at all. In conclusion, it may be a pure speculation of humans to consider spy-hopping as a method of looking at the stars for navigation.
