We have observed a gradual increase of the sea level during the last decades. It is a slow increase, and despite the alarmist attitudes of some, it is nothing to be worried about. By analyzing the data and looking into the matter clearly, we can find that this is a normal process that has happened before.
Even though we have documented a rise in the polar ice melting, this isn't the reason for the increase in the sea level. That ice is already in the water, so it displaces it already. Think of ice cubes in your glass of water, when they melt it doesn't make the water from the glass spill over. The same thing happens when the ice cap melts. Since the Ice is 90% already in water, when it goes into a liquid state, nothing drastic happens.
When it comes to the source for the increase in the sea level, we just don't know where it comes from. Many scientific agencies like NASA have stated that they simply don't know from where all this new water is coming. So it is still a great unknown to us
The sea level has been fluctuating ever since the continents have emerged from the primordial ocean. We have seen many changes through the eons, half of our current landmass was submerged at one point. The same will probably happen later, and it will be through a slow and gradual process. Enough time will pass for humanity to adjust
The lecture and the passage both deal with the evident increase in sea level over the past years. Whilst the author of the passage thinks that the increase in the sea level is nothing to be concerned about and is completely natural for three reasons, the lecturer is quick to point out that there are some serious flaws with the author's claims. In her opinion these claims do not hold water, thereby, addresses, in detail, the trouble with each point.
First and foremost, the writer claims that the documented rise in polar ice melting is not the reason for the rise in sea level. Futhermore, he explains with an example of how when ice cubes already in water upon melting do not cause the water in glass to spill, similarly when ice caps melt there is no increase in sea level and they were already 90% present in water. Of course, while the critics agree with this point they highlighten the fact that the writer has not taken into consideration all such facts. In the listening, for example, the lecturer argues that while melting of ice caps maybe irrelevant, significant increase in sea levels can be marked due to melting of permafrost. Additionally she maintains that permafrost which is ice on land, like in Greenland has started to melt at a much faster rate and along with the already present water in sea has increased the sea level.
One group of scholars, represented by the writer, mention that scientific agencies have been unable to determine the where all the new water accumulating is coming from. He simple states that the scientific agencies have been unable to determine the source of new water and thus it remains a mystery. However the lecturer calls this into question by pointing out that NASA has been able to positively confirm that melting of permafrost is a major contributing factor to increasing level of sea. Further, he remarks that they have since the amount of permafrost is underestimated, its melting would lead to humanity facing dire circumstances.
Finally the author brings his reasoning to close by suggesting that sea level rise is a gradual and natural process ever since the beginning. In addition to that, the passage mentions that this process has happened before and would give humanity enough time to adjust to the changes. Not surprising the lecture takes issue with this statement by contending that human activities such as burning of fossil fuels causes melting of permafrost to increase a hundred times and additional water to be accumulated in the sea. She highlights that without human actions the permafrost's would have stayed the same for over 10000 years more. She argues that this a grim situation and hence if not taken seriously would have fatal consequences.
To sum up, the writer and lecturer are unable to find a common ground on this issue.
