Essay topics:

In many countries, the proportion of older people is steadily increasing.
Could this trend have more positive or negative effects on society?

The global trend of increasing elderly populations presents a complex societal challenge. From my perspective, while the rise of older citizens offers some benefits, the negative consequences for economic stability and social welfare systems ultimately outweigh the positives.
On the one hand, the growing number of elderly people brings back two main benefits namely experience sharing and improvement in overall well-being of a particular nation. First and foremost, it is the senior citizens that possess valuable experience and insights into lives and different fields of career paths. This knowledge will be passed down through generations; as a result, younger generations are likely to make wiser decisions and avoid common mistakes in both personal and professional life. Secondly, the longer the life expectancy of older people is, the more it reflects the country’s high-quality healthcare system and living conditions. A longer average life span means that the senior citizens have better access to quality healthcare services, good nutrition, and effective public health policies.
On the other hand, the aging population tends to adversely affect one country in terms of economic growth. One of the prominent effects is the decrease in the age-working population. In other words, the imbalance between the figure for retired people and the workforce will place an invisible burden on the national economic development on account of a shortage of innovations and physical labor in key industries of a country. As a consequence, the deficiency of young labor force is prone to lower economic productivity. Additionally, pensions and social welfare system will become unsustainable if there are fewer contributors. Another factor is the burden on healthcare system, as older people typically require more frequent medical attention, which causes an increase in governmental spending and strain public health resources.
In conclusion, the downside impacts of the increasing number of the elderly dominate the benefits, especially in national economy. It seems to me that governments should launch public campaigns to raise awareness of young couples about the importance of having children to ensure a sustainable future workforce.
