There are two basic general trends: downward and upward. As regads the first, the number of travellers using bus in their every day life were down over the period. For the first ten years the fogure remained constant at about 4 million. Then, the number of people travelling by bus fell gradually by 1 million, ending the period at only 3 million.

By contrast, the figures for train and car went up by varying degrees. Between 1970 and 2000, there was a moderate increase from 2 million people to 3 million. For the next ten years, the number of commuters remained constant, climbing to 5 million by the year 2030. Likewise, the trend for car was upward. From 1970 to 2000, there was a stability, followed by a significant increase to about 7 million travellers. Furthermore, over the next 30 years, the figure of commuters using car experienced a plateau and then climbed to 9 million.
