Both charts illustrate the number of marriages and divorces which happen over the span of thirty years in the USA between 1970 and 2000 and the marital status of adult Americans in two of the years.
Despite having a stable number of marriages in 1970 and 1980 (2.5 million cases), the citizens experienced a gradual decrease to 2 million in 2000. Meanwhile, the number of divorces in the country remained stable in 1 million case over 1979 and 2000, although in 1980 the case reached its highest point about 1.4 million, which was only about 0.3 million higher than the divorces number in 1990.
Around 70% and 60% of American couples were united in a legal marriage in both years, making the number of marriages only has a slight decrease over the three decades period. In contrast, the marriage split-up showed insignificant number of less than 10% in each year. Subsequently, in the intervening period, people who were not married witnessed a slight increase from 15% to 20%.
In general, the charts above show the moderate drop in the marriage number from 1970 to 2000, while the divorces remained stable. More than half of American adults were married in both years and only small population choose to separate from their spouses.
