The article states that offering an option of 4-day working week with four-fifth of their normal pay will be beneficial for both individual and companies and provides three reasons to support it. However, the professor explains that this policy will not work and challenges each of the author's reasons.

First, the reading states that this policy will increase company profit because staff with more time to relax will make fewer errors. The professor refutes this by saying that profits may not rise rather it will force company to spend more money. Hiring additional staff will add extra training and medical cost to company. He also states that medical cost to company does not change whether employee is working 4-days a week or 5-days a week. Moreover, company will require bigger office space and more computers for additional employees. As a result, all these expenses cut into company’s profit.

Second, the article claims that short workweek will reduce unemployment as occupation shifts to others. However, the speaker contends that hiring new employee is costly as mentioned earlier, so company might look for other options. They might want their workers to work extra time to make up for it. Company might raise the expectation from the employees and wants them to finish 5-day work in 4-day which will make their life unpleasant. Therefore, no additional jobs will be created.

Third, the reading avers that this policy would improve the quality of life for individual employees. The lecturer, however, rebuts this point by stating that it may do harm to staff as it involved a lot of risks. It reduces job stability, reduces chances of advancing in job and promotions. Imagine that some positions such as those of management, the company would prefer a 5-day worker instead of a worker with short working day because it is important to ensure the supervision all the time. He also notes that, they will be the first to lose their jobs in case of economic depression. So, rather than improving, this policy is decreasing the quality of life for individual.
