Describing the chart
The graph shows the literacy rate of the sexes in seven regions in 2011. Generally, males had a higher literacy rate throughout all of the regions in Central Asia and Eastern Europe which had near equal levels.
As can be seen from the chart, the percentage of people who could read and write was highest in Central Asia with nearly 100 % of all people being literate. This was closely followed by Central / Eastern Europe and East Asia / Pacific which both had a literacy rate at over 95% for men and women. However in Latin America / Caribbean and the rate for males was over 95% while for females it was just over 90%. Similarly in the Arab states the literacy rate for men was higher than for women at over 70% and under 90% respectfully.
Despite East and Central Asia both having over a 90% literacy rates for men and women in South and West Asia the percentage of men who could read was around 80% and for women it was nearly 60%. The least overall literacy rate was in Sub-Saharan Africa with men at around 70% and women under 60%.
